UN是United Nations的缩写，翻译为中文即：联合国；UK是United Kingdom的缩写，翻译为中文即：英国。英国其实也是大不列颠及北爱尔兰联合王国的另外一种称谓，其对应的英文翻译是：The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland；US是United States的缩写，翻译为中文即是：美国；USA是United States of America的缩写，翻译为中文即为：美利坚合众国。
值得我们注意的是：US和USA均表示美国，虽然多数情况下可以换用，但也有一定区别(摘自《英语常用词多用途词典》)：用于名词前作定语时，通常只用US，不用USA。如：US citizens 美国公民；the three big US television networks 美国的三大电视网；用于名词前作定语的US有时与形容词American相似。如：In US [American] English the street-level floor is the first floor and the one above is the second floor. 在美式英语中，与街道相平的楼层叫first floor，其上面的一层叫second floor。
